Inner City
The central core of a city, which generally includes the older and more urbanized sections. It contains the major commercial center, termed the central business district. The term also applies to densely populated areas characterized by poor housing and high crime rates.
Inorganic
  1. Designating or composed of matter that is not animal or vegetable; not having the organized structure of living things.
  2. Substance without hydrocarbons; animal or plant matter.
Insert Fittings
Fittings, equipped with external annular rings for gripping, which are inserted into flexible plastic or rubber tubing as a connection.
Insertable Joint
Also called a kafer fitting, this cast iron drainage pipe fitting, with its threaded on hub, is used to attached to cast iron lines already in existence.
Inset
To set into something. Something smaller set within the border of something larger.
Inside Calipers
The ends of this caliper are curved outward to measure inside dimensions.
Inside or Internal Corner
Corner that does not thrust out into a room.
Inside Corner Tool
Metal taping or drywall joint knife which has a blade that is bent lengthwise at slightly more than 90 degrees which make the spring action of the blade press both sides against both walls of an inside corner.
Inside Lot
Building lot, which is surrounded on each side by other building lots.
Inside Micrometer
Measuring tool which expands outward making it possible to measure the inside diameter of a hole, to the nearest 0.001 of an inch. Measurement of 0.0001 is possible with a micrometer with a Vernier scale.
Inside Trim
Interior building trim surrounds windows, doors and baseboards and is both decorative and functional. It finishes the adjoining surfaces between window casements and doorway edges as well as baseboards and stairwells, etc. and comes in several different styles.
In-situ
In it's original place. Often used to refer to keeping the natural lay of the land when building.
Insoluble
Cannot be dissolved in liquid.
Insolvent
Unable to pay debts as they come due. Without funds.
Inspection
Examination or review, which compares objects by use of an acceptable standard to rate quality and to guarantee consistency.
Inspection Fee
Fee paid to a professional, to determine the physical condition of a home, to supplement the information in the appraisal report and is often required by the lender.
Inspection Report
After an inspection, a written report is submitted, detailing the condition of the home's foundation, framing, plumbing, electrical system, heating, air conditioning, fireplaces, kitchen, bathrooms, roof, exterior and interior.
Inspector
A person who inspects. An official examiner.
Installment
  1. Any of several parts appearing at intervals.
  2. Periodic payments of debt in equal parts.
Installment Contract
Purchase agreement where the buyer does not receive title to the property until all installments are paid.
Installment Sale
Transaction in which the sale price is paid in installments.
Instant Start Fluorescent Light
Fluorescent light with a transformer applying a high voltage between the electrodes, making an arc between them to start the light. To keep available for an instant star, the filament is kept heated. With cathode fluorescent lights, the filament has to heat before fluorescence begins.
Institutional Lender
Financial intermediaries who invest in loans and other securities on behalf of their depositors or customers; lending and investment activities are regulated by laws to limit risk.
Instrument
  1. Written legal Document.
  2. Means by which an achievement is made.
  3. A thing by means of which something is accomplished.
  4. Any of the various devices that produce musical sound.
  5. Electrical or mechanical device for navigating.
